Welcome to the Allergy Buddies site.

Here is information about how one mum approached her son starting primary school with a severe egg allergy and the lunchtime scheme she set up called Allergy Buddies.

“When Zac started school, I set up a scheme we called Allergy Buddies. He has ten Buddies who bring egg-free lunchboxes and they all sit together on one table. I provided the parents who volunteered for this scheme with recipe ideas and comprehensive information about shopping at our local stores with egg allergy in mind. I also took in lots of egg-free food for the parents and children to try one day, which was great fun. The staff are great about washing hands before and after lunch. All his classmates know about his allergy and it is very sweet to hear them checking that this or that is ok for Zac. I ordered Allergy Buddy stickers to go on the lunchboxes because so many children have the same box, it makes it easier for the staff.”

I was keen to find a safe way for my son to eat with his classmates, rather than sit on his own. I worked with his school, proposing what became known as the Allergy Buddies scheme. It works well for us and contained on this site is information about how we did it, to help you implement a similar scheme should you want to.
